future now – innovations shaping
tomorrow. A new focus for multimedia content from
Deutsche Welle
What is FN? future now – innovations shaping tomorrow
Deutsche Welle presents 20 trendsetting projects that we
can use to change our lives now – and not sometime in
the distant future. DW focuses on leading German
research institutions with portraits in seven languages
(German, English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and
Indonesian) on television, radio and the project’s
website dw-world.de/futurenow. future now highlights the
significance of research in Germany and the
international relevance of German research around the
world.
Solutions to the most pressing issues
The scientists being highlighted are looking to create
solutions to pressing issues in the areas of
environment, health, communication and mobility –
innovatively and application oriented. How will we live
in the future? How will we communicate? How will we get
from point A to point B? Will we be able to find
remedies for incurable diseases? future now provides
answers.
future now is being supported by the German Federal
Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Multimedia web portal - International teams of reporters
from Deutsche Welle research each of the projects and
present them in a “future lab” at dw-world.de/futurenow
– including articles, images, audio and video content in
seven languages. Radio and television features will
provide background stories to each of the projects and
WebDocs complete the in-depth coverage online.
Environment - We also need new ideas for the
conservation of our natural resources and our
environment. future now presents groundbreaking
approaches to the most pressing environmental issues.
Find out how genes from the Himalayas can help make
agricultural plants more resistant – and thereby help
combat global hunger. Discover how illuminated bacteria
monitor the water quality in Bangladesh and protect
millions of people from being poisoned, or how German
researchers are working in Vietnam to make more water
and power available. future now presents sustainable
concepts and the people who came up with them.
Health - Few areas of research are tied to hope and
expectations as much as medicine. Is aging a reversible
process? Can we cure illnesses that have been deadly up
until now? future now shows creative approaches from
around the world. In China, stem cells are being used as
the model system for the development of new treatments
against genetic diseases. In Munich, scientists are
looking into how implanted microchips can heal diseases
and increase mental and memory capacities in healthy
test subjects. Researchers from Jena and Munich present
revolutionary methods to the early detection of
Alzheimer’s. And in Heidelberg, viruses are being used
in the fight against tumors.
Communication - The “normal” forms of communication are
becoming faster and more complex every day – but how
will they continue to develop? future now shows that the
future of data processing has already begun. Like
transferring large amounts of data with light or organic
illumination diodes that turn entire walls into display
areas. Find out what developers are doing to miniaturize
computers and make the promise of universal computer
performance a reality.
Mobility - For the future job market, more and more
people will have to become more mobile and flexible.
future now highlights projects that deal with the
opportunities and consequences that exist – from the
development of self-steering cars and quieter and
lower-emission airplanes with fuel cells in Cologne to
the production of natural gas and the storage of harmful
CO2 in the sea floor near New Zealand.
